How We Review and Rank Places

On this page

Last updated: 3 November 2026

Top Rated Places publishes independent editorial comparisons of places and services. A guide’s question defines its scope: the destination, occasion, customer and practical conditions that make a recommendation useful.

What qualifies an option for a guide

An option needs positive evidence that it fits the guide’s location and purpose. We look for a verifiable location or service area, a relevant offering and enough reliable information to explain the choice. A business’s popularity or category label alone does not establish eligibility.

Temporary and seasonal options can be useful when their dates and conditions are clear. Closed, unconfirmed or adjacent options need explicit context rather than being presented as dependable current choices.

How places are compared

We compare the distinctions that matter for the reader: for example cuisine and occasion, location, access, service format, booking conditions, price basis and the strength of supporting evidence. The guide should explain why each recommendation is included and who it best suits.

List position is an editorial judgement for that question. We do not apply a universal 40/25/20/15 percentage formula or present editorial order as a measured customer-quality score. Attributed reviews, awards and independent recognition can inform a comparison; none is a substitute for explaining the fit.

Sources and responsibility

Research uses operator information and attributed independent sources where useful. Check the links, research notes and limitations in the guide. An official page supports the facts it actually states; it does not prove every service-quality claim.

Each guide identifies its responsible author. Sarah Haddad is the responsible author named on our editorial guides. AI tools assist research, drafting and consistency checks. A byline or source-check date does not imply a first-hand visit, tasting, measured test or separate reviewer unless the guide documents that work.

How dates and updates work

Publication, editing and factual source-check dates describe different events. A design, image or metadata correction does not establish that every venue has been checked again. Review coverage varies by guide; we do not promise that every guide receives an annual inspection.

We revisit material changes such as openings, closures, access rules, prices and rebrands, and assess credible correction requests. Confirm time-sensitive details with the operator before booking or visiting.

Independence and transparency

Payment cannot buy editorial inclusion or a higher ranking. Advertising, affiliate links and business partnerships do not determine editorial order. Sponsored content and paid Featured Place profiles are labelled separately.
